Dear Mr. King,

I referred your letter of the 7th July confidentially to the Home Office who have under consideration the question of taking action against smugglers. They are considering the matter but meanwhile they enquire whether you are in touch with the Metropolitan and Liverpool police as to the identity of the smuggling gang. My impression is that you are but I don't like to tell the Home Office without confirmation.

The Home Office also suggest that any information you have might be communicated through us to them.
